System Director’s Report:

July 2007

In my flower gardens, the lily and hosta blooms have faded and phlox, inula and Joe Pye weed are in full flower. When I last wrote, the Summer Library Program was in full swing and now it is drawing to a close. It is hard to believe another summer is almost over.

Each July, SCLS staff and people from member libraries attend the WiLSWorld conference to learn about new developments in technology for libraries. This year, using open source software for applications from integrated library systems to social networking was a hot topic. One option the LINK consortium will discuss for the SirsiDynix system replacement is based on open source. I mention this because during one of our upcoming Board meetings we would like to include a short session about open source software—what it is and how it might be used here at SCLS.

At a meeting in the near future we will bring to the board a revision of our resource library contract. We also will ask you to complete a survey designed to elicit feedback about topics on which you would like more information, or other changes you would like to see in our meetings.

In the meantime, enjoy the rest of the summer. The sky is blue. The grass is brown. And the sedum and mums will be flowering before you know it.

See you on the 13th!
