System Director’s Report

October, 2009

Tim and Brad from our Delivery staff took my bookcase off the wall this afternoon and moved it to our new space at 4610 S. Biltmore Lane. In just three weeks from today the “big” move will happen, but some offices are already starting to look pretty bare. We are all sorting and boxing our “stuff,” tagging our furniture, and finding treasures and trash we never knew we had. Phone lines and large pieces of equipment needed for our telecommunications network have been installed. Our upcoming board meeting will be the last one in our current space. Stef, who has headed up this whole project from the beginning, will give you an update on all that is happening with the move.
I am writing this at the end of the second of three days of interviews for the Technology Project Manager position. This is always an interesting process, but especially so in this time of change in facilities, staff, systems, organization and governance. Experts advise that when you are making a change, you should make it big enough to notice. We have surely accomplished that!

Enclosed with your mailing this month is the revised “Agreement to Participate in a Shared Automated Resources System” contract. This contract has been distributed to the library boards of all current LINK consortium participants with a request that they act on it at their November and December meetings. As we have discussed, the new contract dissolves the LINK consortium and replaces it with a contract for SCLS to provide services to each member library participating in the shared system within the new governance structure. We are already receiving signed copies from library boards. You have seen a draft version of the contract and we have discussed this process. In November I am asking that you take formal action on the contract.

Many of our staff and members attended the annual Wisconsin Library Association conference last week in Appleton. There was a feeling of energy and enthusiasm in the air. It is an exciting time to be working in libraries. We will share some of the high points when we see you on the 9th.
